It's sit down with the FSM and just read it. You don't have to memorize it but even with just a quick once through not only will you pick up a lot it will give you a good bead on just how much information is in that book. The person can understand that it's the instruction manual for every part of the car but until you go through it and get a frame of reference for just what that actually means its hard to really understand that pretty much anything you ever need to know about your car is in that book. The first thing I do when approaching a new task is check the manual and I still run into situations where something you thought was entirely straight forward has a trick or check procedure to it that makes all the difference. How many "my driveshaft is vibrating" posts do you see and yet it's entirely spelled out in the book.
