Message	...ground the green with black stripe wires while the solenoids remain attached to the wire harness, if the noise goes away it's the VTC, if the noise remains it's not the VTC. I would do the grounding while the engine is off and fire it up real quick to check the situation - this should minimize more damage if it turns out to be a rod bearing.
