| Locksmiths simply measure the height of the peaks on the key which push up on the individual pins within the lock. From that they can round up to the correct height and they then cut the new key based on the numbers. Working from a measurement to get the correct numbers and then cutting fresh will produce a key closer to the factory original. It's better than a straight up copy because your original key is likely slightly worn down from use and a straight up copy would copy that defect. I'm actually tempted to take my lock sets in to a locksmith to get them torn apart and reassembled with fresh pins.
