Message 1. Cold Start up. The oil will flow much quicker when you first start your car, no matter what the temperature.
2. At operating temperature (100C), it will thin out less than 10W30.
3. Beyond operating temperature (over 100C), it's slope of viscosity will be less steep than that of 10W30. (e.g. at 160C, 10W30 will be less thick than 0W40).

20W50 IMHO is about the worst you could do for the engine. It's way too thick at start up to effectively flow. Most of your wear happens at start-up.

Remember, we aren't talking conventional motor oils like in the old days when mechanics would recommend 10W30 for summer and 5W30 for winter. Modern synthetics are a totally different beast.

Don't take my word for it, but look at what people have found by used oil analysis.
