Message You can replicate the stock settings with an adjustable FUCA, and using this logic, no adjustable tension rod would be required since (assuming your Z body lines are intact and springs are up to par) the stock tension rod would provide the stock caster setting.

The reason they are recommended to purchase in tandem is because the FUCA bearings themselves cannot handle a dynamic caster. I haven't seen a failed adjustable FUCA personally, but this is the reasoning that makes sense and is given by any seller of adjustable sealed bearing FUCAs. The stock tension rods, with ES bushings and especially the OEM rubber sealed bushings, have lateral movement as opposed to a solid bearing that locks in position.
