Pressure is a measure of resistance to flow.
Flow is what provides protection.
The pressure required is just enough to provide
a film thickness great enough to prevent metal to metal contact. About 10PSI per 1000 RPM is enough in an engine with reasonably tight clearances.Since most wear occurs at start up, I use the thinnest oil I can that provides the 10 PSI per 100rpm. In my engine with close to 80K on it that is Mobil 1 0W-20 or 5W-20. I believe that thicker oils do not flow well at start up and that modern chemistry if better than the days when we ran 20w-50 in our V8 muscle cars. Many high performance new cars are specifying the 0W and 5W oils.
