Message I had 3" turbo back exhaust.. and a little different induction piping layout than stock..
however, I was on stock exhaust manifolds.. They were truly comparable to a completely stock Z with cats intact. Infact.. I believe they may have been more responsive than stock turbo (stock cats still installed)
The GT28RS are really not too much more "laggy" with MS manifolds.. I can't remember the exact RPM vs stock etc when boost comes on.. but I can assure you.. you will definitely be pleased with them..
If you keep 2.5" exhaust piping.. it will actually make the car feel a little quicker spooling because the power band starts a little lower.. but the 3" full turbo back will increase top end by a good bit.

I say.. if you have upgraded exhaust manifolds, Get the GT28RS turbo. You will not be disappointed with them.

I feel that I can pretty much say that running MS manifolds with GT28RS are *somewhat* comparable to a GT28R turbo with stock exhaust manifolds..

Like I said, "real-world street driving".. a few hundred RPM of spool is negligible..

This is a tricky subject because dynos may show power curves alot more precise than driving the car on the street in terms of spool up/ vs feeling the power etc.

The GT28RS was a specialty flow turbo from Garrett. It is a very good flowing turbo vs. response for its size.

If you have the supporting mods.. (dual pop, full exhaust, ECU, etc) I would NOT say that the .64 a/r exhaust turbine housing'd GT28RS is considered "laggy".

The GT28R is a very responsive turbo.. but you quickly will see how you will have to MAX it out to get the power you want.. (I guess the same could be said about any turbo). Pushing alot of heat and killing the turbo life.

However; It is always safer for the engine etc to run a turbo that is more efficient.. which the GT28RS is more efficient than the 550s, GT28R etc. You can push more boost without pushing as much heat.

But you have to weigh out the pros/ cons with any turbo.. Like if you compared the GT28RS to a 3076.. the GT3076 is more efficient.. (In terms of pushing heat vs. boost pressure) but you are trading lag for power..

The beauty of the GT28RS (.64) Versus the GT28R and smaller turbos is that there is not much more lag (that you would truly really notice on the street) especially with upgraded manifolds.. and you have the ability to turn up the boost and have even a more fun Z car.

I guess everyone's opinions will be different... I don't think I have ever heard of someone with the .64 a/r GT28RS turbo with upgraded MS manifolds that have complained about lag or about it at all in terms of power delivery etc.

I always recommend the GT28RS .64 turbo if you have upgraded MS manifolds. If you have a built motor.. then I SURELY would say go with the GT28RS..
