Don't forget that motor oils which have a wider viscosity range such as 0W-40 are made with more additives and base stocks. This is why these oils remain in grade for a much shorter period (mileage wise) than those that have a bit narrower range. Also, the lower cold temp rated oils have a larger percentage of thinner base stocks. This forces the companies to add more viscosity improving additives to achieve the same high temp rating as, say, a 10W-40 has.
