| inlet will improve the efficiency it operates at for a given manifold boost pressure. The peak efficiency of the turbo compressor is fixed and you can look at the compressor map to see these figures. However, the compressor map doesn't relate the efficiency to a specific boost pressure - it is relative to the pressure ratio. You have to look at the inlet pressure vs. outlet pressure to determine where you fall on the Y axis of the map as well as the X axis (massflow). Where these two values intersect reveals what efficiency you are operating at. When the inlet to the compressor is restricted, in order to reach, say, 18psi of boost, your pressure ratio will have to be higher to make that target boost pressure as compared to an inlet that breathes more effectively. At the upper levels of boost a turbo can produce there is a general trend that the efficiency begins to fall off. Anything you can do to help the compressor operate at higher efficiency will ultimately mean better power, torque, and response. Hope this helps! :)
