Message You can tell them apart easy.
The metal is different, the welds are different, the AMS are not cleaned up inside well, ect.....
We do not weld around the outside near the flange as this makes the product weak at the point it gets the hottest.
Welding the pipe all the way around right at the flange is not good, welding causes what is known as cut back making the edge of the welded area the thinnest. The pipe gets hottest right where the pipe starts at the edge of the the flange. this area will expand and contract the most and welding all the way around making it thinner and more brittle right at the weakest point can cause issues down the road.
Welding the inside makes it the strongest because it stays cooler and can not expand and contract as much when part of the flange. Because we grind the welds back for flow and they are ground by hand by humans, It can make the weld to weak to support the weight of the pipe if ground back too far.
Adding tack welds to the pipe at the flange adds more strength, and still allows the pipe to expand and contract without breaking it. We tack weld the pipes at the flange, and AMS welds all the way around.
I have seen a couple sets of the AMS pipes and they were rusting on the inside where the weld penetrated, suggesting the metal is not the 304 stainless we use.
I also noted the fitment was poor where the pipe pieces were welded together adding more turbulence.
