Message 1 - I never discouraged Mike from saving weight, I merely asked why he chose aluminum. The reason I ask is because given what he has done (cutting out the spare tire well) has probably compromised the unibody and his #1 priority should be resolving that problem, with weight being a secondary issue.

If he was looking to simply lay an aluminum sheet over the hole, affixing it with a proper adhesive, aluminum might be the right solution, but I have a feeling he's looking to build a 'box' of sorts similar to the original well, and I think that poses a much more difficult proposition.

2 - I'd still laugh at a lotus elise with:
-Cutom Fiber Glass sub enclosure behind seats wrapped in black novasuede
-Two JL audio amps sunken into trunk floor with nova suede false floor
-10 lb Battery under trunk floor
-Custom turbo emblem mounted on Carbon Fiber backing plate on box
-Umbrella Auto Designs Variable Ride Height System
(Adjustable ride height suspension controlled electronically from cockpit
(same thing in new Lamborghinis and Ferraris)
