| Found what appeared to be an unmolested stock 1993 TT on CL the other day. I spoke with the owner who told me it had been well maintained and was still owned by the original owner. It had over 150k miles but based on the pictures and description it was a clean car. To make things better it was priced at a deal. Now being that I have gotten deals on CL I decided to make the most of the great find and drive down the same day. A good friend of mine who is currently an unemployed student / army reservist was not busy and agreed to drive with me. We set off on the three hour drive to go take a look at the Z. So after three hours we arrived. I saw the car and it looked great. Stock as stock could be after 17 years. Sure it had a couple dents and dings but nothing to be unexpected. The owner gave me the keys and I took it out for a test drive. Now this was my first time driving a TT. I pulled first gear and well it was disappointing. I thought to myself, "Maybe there is just some turbo lag in 1st". Next street I pulled first and second. Top of second gear and what felt like an eternity. Much too slow to be a TT... While driving I investigated and found the problem immediately. Boost was never achieved. The boost gauge never went positive. Then I smelled the burning oil. I returned. Parked the car and saw the oil burning from the tail pipes after it was shut off. I told the owner, "Its a great car but there is one problem. The turbos are blown". The owner looked away from me (avoiding eye contact) and said she had "no idea". Yeah. Right. I knew right then I had met one of the infamous Craigslist scammers. Bummed out about the worn out TT and with the drive ahead I realized that still I have never driven a TT (this worn out car was slower than my NA). And of course a good deal is sometimes too good to be true. My search for a stock TT goes on.
