done 60 mpg a few times too. I did drive closer to traffic for drafting but without tailgating, driving 60 mph on the highway, consistent power control, and lots of coasting in gear. That 03 Jetta TDI ran better than most and my current one, an 06 Jetta TDI has only gotten around 55 mpg personal best, around 40 average mixed.
