The Spec Miata guys were the ones who didn't like the R-888's. As they were running RA-1's before, they didn't like the change and enough stink was raised that Toyo brought back the RA-1 in the Spec Miata sizing.
I have talked to many guys running the R-888 at tracks and nobody said they hated them. In fact, many of the people I talked to liked them better than the RA-1, although they perform differently and you have to adjust your driving style to suit.
Having said this, another fact I found out this fall was that the Canuckistan Toyo dealers sell the R-888 as a GG compound, which is harder than the GGG compound that the American R-888 tires are made of. They are a completely different level of tire than the US counterpart. It's stamped on the sidewall. I was a bit choked to find that Toyo was marketing this way (GGG compound tires are unavailable here). Plus Toyo plays a bunch of pricing games and exclusive dealer crap that is also annoying.
To this end, I'll be ordering either the Hoosier R6's or Nitto NT-01's for next year.
