He will readily admit that his car is inferior in most comparisons to the Z. We have modified them at roughly the same rate and I beat him by 1-3 car lengths every single time we run them. He's a good driver so I know is the car and not him. I can tell you in the year that he has owned the car he has had to replace his a/c, injectors and head gasket. I think he's put almost $3k into the car in that time and his car is a '94 compared to my '90 which has cost me nothing more than oil changes in the last 2 years! The VR4 is not a bad car and the AWD is a big selling point but I can't tell where it helps the car launch any better than the Z. On a scale of 1 to 10 I rate the Z a 9+ (brakes needed work) and the VR4 is a 7. It's barely even in the same class. Just my opinion...
