I'm not saying the D300 is a bad camera, or isn't a step up from the D90. They're both great cameras. But if I was to jump up from the D90, I would land on the D700. Maybe because I shoot with a lot of natural light, no studio, no flash. I'm no pro either. But I've read reviews on the D90 when it came out and the reviewers had said it was near the same specs as the D300, in picture quality, as the sensor is the most important part of a camera body when it comes to that. The D300 is far better in terms of durability, speed, and other pro options, but when I rented a D700 I found that I never had to deal with noise, ever. To me that's big.
