It takes a long time to learn and develop photography skills, IMO it's silly to buy a high end camera as your first, it's better to get a modest setup and upgrade when you see the need. If you have a larger budget, you'd be better off investing in lenses (as mentioned already). You might want to wait a couple weeks. There are rumors of a Canon 60d on the horizon - it should fall between the T2i and the 7d. If nothing else it will drive down the price of the 50d, and you could consider that as well. BTW Nikons are great too, I just don't know anything about them. My uncle has a d90 and it's a nice camera - seems on par with the Canon 50d.
