Thanks for the pics and your take on things. Always good to get more opinions and info on things like this even if there is the obvious. One thing that should be noted about SZ's newer designs (and I think all of their 3" downpipes) is that they are only spot welded in a few locations on the outside of the flange to hold the flange in place while the pipes are welded to the flange on the inside and then honed smooth. Examples below.
