Message I know how everyone likes pictures so I just thought I'd share. Here are a few pictures of how (I) to repair eproms when there are broken pins. This was for a recent NISTune install.

The broken pin.

Solder a small wire to the surface of the broken pin. I prefer this type of wire because it is very small, easily takes to being soldered, is insulated when needed, the insulation is easily removable with heat from the soldering iron and it is available at Radio Shack in either blue or white.

Cut the wire.

At this point I make a hook to allow more surface of the wire to make contact with the slotted pin sockets of the zif socket in the eprom reader/writer.

The zif pin sockets are wide to accommodate varying widths of eproms. In this picture you can see the width of the zif pin sockets.

Before going any further in the repair I go ahead and read the data in order to avoid any other setbacks that may occur during the eprom repair. The temporary fix to allow reading the eprom.

Next I install the eprom into a socket which acts as a new set of legs for the eprom. It adds a little height to the eprom but there is still enough room for it in the ECU (if used again). Since the wire is smaller than the pin socket I cut the wire to length and solder the wire to the pin socket.

After the repair I read the eprom again to verify everything is ok.

After all is done and verified I use the bin file to create the ENT file which is necessary to write the image to the NISTune board using the NISTune base image programming board. I prefer to program the board this way because it's fast, verifies the image write and can be done in home.

Of course if you are able to do so you can always create a new eprom once you've read and saved the eprom data. Thats about it.
