... how often the maps are updated. The system is pretty useless if it doesn't cover new areas of your city or suburban area. Nothing like driving off the map into uncharted space (actually, it's pretty cool... here be dragons)
Garmin is pretty good, usually one update a year released for their City Navigator or NT system. I've also bought a couple of Nuvi 750's for our service trucks with the 'Lifetime Map Upgrade' (~ $150.00 or so, allows up to 4 downloads a year).
I also run Garmin on my bike, and a portable that gets swapped between my Z's, as well as a Kenwood DNX-8120 in my Frontier which has a Garmin-powered GPS system, updateable by SD card.
Others like Tom Tom, they are pretty well supported; Magellan is so-so but has infrequent map updates, and just for a laugh, I was playing with the Factory GMC Nav system in one of our newer trucks, which was a total joke. You can't do anything without the DVD in, and then it's cumbersome and clunky. Expensive factory option as well.
Oh, and the Clarion looks interesting, I'd ask who does the GPS engine and what kind of updates are available.
