Following the service manual is usually a good idea, but like you said, it's not gospel.There are plenty of guys on this site who do things in a way that the service manual might not say to do them... does that make them wrong? Or is it possible that the service manual isn't 100% accurate and complete in every possible situation? Other manufacturers (I think even Nissan sometimes) specify an alternative replacement interval in months if you don't hit the mileage interval first. But since it doesn't say anything about time in the service manual, I'm sure you'd be ok with a belt that's 100 years old, as long as it still has 50k on it.
