I'm sure there are literate people who say "rims" and are otherwise competent, productive members of society. I'm sure I've swapped an "its" and "it's" on a late night post before. But when I hit a post and see multiple "then"s for "than"s, an "I seen", and a "suppose to", I can see the author has dropped below 5th grade writing skills, and there are pretty good odds that sloppiness shows up elsewhere in his life. Kind of like how seeing a temp tag that's clearly a year and a half old means a good chance of an unlicensed, uninsured driver I don't want to be next to on the road. There's a difference between regional dialects / slang, and broken English / basic grammar failure. You wouldn't pretend a toothless yokel's language was passable, so don't pretend urban illiteracy is any different just because PC racism calls for a lower bar.
