I don't know a SINGLE large company who will part out a complete product just because a customer asks them for a tiny piece from it (*especially* if the part was broken by the user - if it's defective or under full warranty, that's another story). It was unreasonable in every sense of the word to hope they would sell you just a piece of a product.
