Message problem causing turbo failures on the MazdaSpeed Protege's were the factory "glued" intake piping. Mazda didn't clamp the 2 plastic pieces together, but rather glued them. Over short period of time the glue would fail. So, essentially a big boost leak and because of this, you overspin the turbo because you don't build up pressure to open the wastegate.

As for the differential, the Tochigi Fujiyama Sangyo KK Limited Slip Diffs had a tendency to fall apart, especially if drag raced. Mazda came out with a revised part number later down the road which had a "welded" LSD and the problem went away.
