Seriously. They don't get your money if you don't pass. That's actually an incentive to pass you, not that they will automatically pass you. These technicians are mechanics or ex-mechanics, so even before they do the sniffer test on a car, they already know if it's going to pass or not. In my experience, the cars that go in and out quickly are the ones that pass. The ones that fail take a long time, upwards of 20 minutes. Anyway, whether or not you pass a visual depends on your attitude and the shape your car is in. If there seems to be a lot done to the car, a proper smog tech will be sure to check everything. But if the car appears stock or have minor modifications, they will pass the visual for you. Remember, the more passes they make, the more money they make. All in all, you shouldn't need to worry about a visual unless your car has been a gross polluter in the past, you have lots and lots of modifications, or you are going to a smog referee.
