From my younger years of RC car racing and various minor soldering jobs, you want at least a 40-watt iron. Anything less will take to much time spent with the iron on the board and cause damage. Make sure you use the right solder and use proper prep of the tip and the items. Practice soldering two metal wires together (or something similar) to improve your abilities before you start on what you are trying to do. Have a wet sponge beside you to keep the tip clean. There are plenty of things you can do to make a clean solder with no damage. If I am wrong someone please correct me, this is only from my limited experience.
