Today was day 2 of my 120k timing belt replacement on my '95 NA. After several trips to multiple stores, I finally obtained and subsequently modified a puller to remove the crank pulley. I set the arms around the thickest of the three ridges, as I interpreted from the FAQ, and started cranking on the nut. Much to my dismay, the two inner belt-tracks smoothly (relatively, of course) slid off the pulley. Am I correct in the assumption that this is not the ideal situation? Do I need a new crank pulley at this point? If so, is CourtesyParts' price of $270 pretty much what I'm looking at paying? Should I go with a UD pulley, a mod I've read conflicting reports on in my searches(since it reduces the power to the accessories the pulley drives)? Click for (much) larger images:
