:State of Missouri sent out warning to gas stations when ethanol was first introduced warning about cleaning their storage tanks before loading ethanol gas. The warning stated that ethanol would attract moisture and end up in customers tanks causing damage.
:What you see is most likely due to ethanol gas and its effects.

that type of corrosion shouldn't occur if the part is properly plated. if the part is zinc chromated or anodized, there is no way corrosion would occur within 1,000 miles.
