I don't think you can see the shoe with the rotor still attached, so you may have to remove the rotor. If the adjuster on the parking brake lever is screwed all the way in, it may be a sign that the person who owned the car before you used the parking brake for things other than a parking brake and have since worn the shoes down.
Think of the E-Brake shoes as disc pads. If you let them wear all the way down they will score the rotor/drum and you'll have to have it resurfaced or trash it.
The inside of the rear rotor acts as a drum for the E-Brake. If you've ever worked on a car with rear drums, you'll find it interesting that the Z has a disc (rear brakes) and drum (E-Brake) brake in one.
