Message	wood fibers, the case we are talking about is spanning perpendicular to the fibers. Wood should not be loaded to create tension across the grain. I'm not saying that it will split, I'm just saying that it's not intended to be loaded this way. The 500-700psi is cross grain compression, so there is very little possibility of crushing the wood under the wheel or at the 2x4 support.
