Message Hello folks, I was thinking about posting something about PVC and real leather for sometime on tt.net. So, here I am. What is PVC and how can you tell?……..

PVC is part leather and part plastic lamination…….bottom line, not real or genuine leather, hence cost far more less then genuine leather. Why is it part leather and part lamination? This is because the lower portion of it is made with the left over of leather hide (the actual hide is about an inch thick, in a tannery it gets processed and go through the shavers to get the desired thickness, the rest is left over). Now, manufacturers don’t just throw the left over in the garbage, they use it and put PVC lamination on top of it. The result is leather look a like product called PVC. I hope you understand what I just said.

Now, how can you tell if the stuff that you have bought is made with real leather or PVC, because if you look at it, it looks very even and excellent quality, even an upholstery shop sometime couldn’t tell the difference. I went to many tanneries and they all said that the easiest way to tell is to expose it to fire. Off course you don’t need to expose the whole seat skin to fire, just cut an inch or 2 and then use a cigarette lighter, use your thumb to rub the surface, if the material comes off its PVC (because it’s a lamination), if it doesn’t then its real skin!!!

I hope this would not get anyone offended, and yes, please do the test when you purchase a leather product and post the results. Thanks for your time! See the pics, this is not me btw, someone who did the test for me.....
