| Also, more efficient turbo and intercooler setups allow for more boost on a higher compression ratio. The reason for detonation is air that gets so hot from increased pressure that it ignites the fuel prematurely. But if the air going into the cylinder is cool enough (such as from an efficient turbo/intercooler setup), the pressure won't increase the temperature to the point of pre-ignition. And considering the difference between stock and aftermarket intercoolers has been shown to decrease temperature by up to about 90 degrees (La-Z-Link), it is reasonable to say that there are efficient enough turbos and intercoolers on the market today to provide fair amounts of boost to a naturally aspirated engine. And it also takes less boost on a higher CR engine to make more power.
