Message the engine has to come out nonetheless so do a leak down test and if it's the valve seals than pull the heads and have them rebuilt. It's actually very easy to yank the heads off when the engine is out.

If it's the rings, than it's up to him if he wants to just get the upgrades and rebuild the engine when it dies.
