you can have 7 characters and one space, like mine, but no more than 7 characters even if you don't need/want the space. If it is a standard plate that you are making it on it is no big deal, just an orange in the background. Now if you buy a specialty plate and have it with vanity letters, it is a whole different deal. Rules for letters and spaces are the same, but usually you buy a specialty plate to rep something else and you don't want to cover that up. For example, an FSU tag (the best I might add) has the school symbol on the left leaving only room for 5 or maybe 6 letters w/o getting on the symbol. Hope this helps.
