it is a scam, of sorts. The story they give you is BS, and the speakers aren't worth what's on the price tag. But they aren't stolen or anything. $50 is about right. Basically what happens is they sell you this story and the boss gets like $100 or $200 for each sell and they keep whatever else they can get for them. He's got people to actually spend the $500 or more per speaker, it's just pathetic.
