Those "'luxury lifestyle" crowds don't even know what a GTR is. They only want what give's them the most "show points" and will continue to buy bmws and mercs. If they do buy sport cars they only buy what their friends buy, ferrari, porsche, lambs ect. The GTR is geared toward people that know what a sport car is. Sales of the GTR will go more toward those people. Like you said, the amount of GTRs being sold in the US is less than the Zs, only around 1500 per year. Less volume = less popularity but I'm sure Nissan did that to see what kind of bite they will get on the sale of the GTR. But even with all that, the changing economic state is going to have more people going green, and the uber rich that push green, movie stars ect. won't be buying GTRs, they will be putting their money on electric cars like the tesla roadster. With the advancement of electric car design and the high price tags of both the tesla and the gtr I'd put my money on a tesla. Hell, the tesla even looks better than the gtr. If I'm going to spend +70k for a GTR I might as well spend another +30 for a tesla especially when it only cost one cent a mile for "fuel" :) IMO I think Dee is on the right track with this one and the GTR is going to be a doomed car. But of course, only time will tell :) I doubt it will be advantageous of Nissan to sell only 1500 per year. If they don't get a good bite on the sale of those 1500 GTRs the amount will drop or stop.
