bearing you see. The i.d. of that piece has a step in it that shoulders the back lip of the cam helix and is a press fit onto the o.d. of the cam helix. The shouldere'd bore of the thrust bearing prevents it from being pushed further down the o.d. of the cam helix.
And yes on the two pieces - the one I modified is the later model VTCs and the one in the top of the pic is an early model. The only difference in them internally is that the cam helix on the later model incorporates a seal. The seal on the piston helix in the later model is also made of teflon rather than steel like used in the early model VTCs. Other than that, they are identical.
