Message the material/metal you are trying to polish.
for aluminum for instance, I would start with 100, 80 will get rid of the roughness of aluminum cast quickly but will score the aluminum. For round pieces like H2O pipes buy some 120 grid sanding belts and cut them into strips, also at Home Depot in the plumbing dept. get a roll of emery mesh cloth, it's a 180 grid.
The compounds and wheels are also available at Home Depot and Lowes in the Hardware dept. The type of compound depends on metal/material being polished.
The buffing wheels have a stitch around the entire wheel, wheels with low stitch count are for buffing, wheels with high stitch count are for polishing.
Also to hold the pieces being polished in place get some pieces of 1X6 pine at HD or Lowes and bolt the pieces being worked on to the wood then set it on a bench vise.
Also if you have the $$ and plan on doing it to many part, get your self a bench grinder for hand held parts.
