But even the jump from stock to GT2860RS's is a BIG jump. There is more lag and it turns the car into an entirely different machine. Not to mention that there is a certain level of modification required to just run that level of turbos to begin with... Sport 500's can be dropped into a Z32 with an intake, cat-back, and ECU (and stage III level clutch)... the Specialty Z turbos absolutely cannot... they require downpipes, larger injectors (you'd never want to run them even at the wastegate preset on 370cc injectors, if you ask me), a heavy duty clutch (which in itself usually requires other things), etc etc etc. If he's going with larger turbos, he's going to need at least $6k off the bat between the larger turbos and additional things he needs. So if he's going from stock to aftermarket turbos, it's a MUCH larger investment to go that big and then "plan to do the rest later" as compared to holding off for a bit. It's much smarter to build up the car as far as it can go with stock turbos (skipping turbo-specific parts like downpipes... why get 4-bolt now when he'll need 5-bolt later, for example) and then buy aftermarket turbos when he's gone as far as he can go without pulling the engine. It's like nitrous... you don't do it first and then build the car around it... nitrous is the last thing you add to the car to get that little bit of power that you couldn't find any other way. I ended up spending $11k all at once when I went from Stage III to GT2530's, but I only did it because my stock turbos were dead anyway... it was either replace the turbos and then replace them again with the ones I wanted down the road, or just get it over with. If my stock turbos hadn't died, I would've taken the car as far as it could go with them before even looking at placing an order for GT2530's or similar.
I love elitists who aren't really elite in any way... they amuse me greatly. |
