You will either have a compressor clutch go out, the system will develop a leak, the expansion valve malfunctions, the compressor fails or there is an electrical problem. Granted you can "recharge" the system if you like, but the refrigerant will not go bad. : : If it needs a recharge, the system has a leak somewhere. These are closed systems and if you have a leak , you should pursue a repair rather than a band-aid approach. IF you just want to charge it and be done with it, go to Autozone and pick up an R134 recharge kit. It has a guage that you can use to pressureize the system to a proper press. Problem with this approach is that if there is a leak, it is most likely that you are also leaking ester oil that is used to lubricate the system and help the refrigerant retain some thermal momentum. If you run it out of ester, you will destroy the compressor and that is big bucks.
: NOT LEAKING.....JUST NEEDS RECHARGED I BELIEVE.....NEVER DONE IT MYSELF.......THE GOOD THING IS I STILL HAVE A WARRANTY UNTILL 85K..HAVE 37 RIGHT NOW.....SO IF..... : : : : : : HAVE A 96 SLICKTOP THAT NEED TO HAVE A/C RECHARGED......WHERE SHOULD I GO....DEALER TRIED TO SAY THEY "MIGHT" HAVE TO DO A TEST TO INSURE IT NEEDS IT......EXTRA COST....IT NEEDS RECHARGED THIS I KNOW,,BUT WHERE IS THE SMARTEST PLACE TO GO IN TAMPA/CLEARWATER AREA.... : : : : : MICHAEL : : : EX.TT OWNER.....:)
