and solar panels are still expensive.  however, more progress is being made toward better and cheaper solar cells.  I had an idea about using car batteries and an inverter to power parts of your home.  Wire certain lights in your house through a throwover switch (either battery or normal power), and a few batteries.  Could be charged in your car while driving since the alternator would have enough after charging the primary.  Just don't overload your car.  extra weight makes the car less efficient.  then plug your car to your house and run those lights off those spare batteries.  and if you're using compact flourescent lights, even better.
