from all the posts I've seen: The resistor trick is just that, it's a trick. It's not really a correction to the problem at all. If I were you, I would change/fix whatever the actual problem is, which is either the sensor and/or the harness. And for the PTU, if it's the newer style PTU, you probably just have connection issues or there's a butt-load of corrosion in there. However, if it's the old style PTU, you should change to the new style. Good luck.
