Are they using Topline bearings too (most shops do use them)? The machine work shouldn't be more than $300 and that includes boring, honing, new freeze plugs, etc, etc, etc. I hope they didn't turn the crank because you really don't want to do that on the VG (most machine shops will tell you that you should). Pulling the engine shouldn't take more than 6 hours = $510 tops. So my guestimate would be about $800.
