Message is possible if you drive with a light foot and keep your speed down. The new common rail VW should be even more powerful and more economical despite being a larger car. Especially on the highway, diesels are unbeatable for fuel economy. Although the diesel option costs more, you'll make it up in resale big time. A 97 jetta is worth about $5000 with high miles if it's a diesel, a gasser jetta with similar condition/miles is worth about $1500. See my VW diesel site in my sig for more info.
