However before you go into debt over a Prius, why not see if you can pick up a CRX HF. Before the rings when out on my 1989 Integra I was getting upwards of 40 mpg. If I had the space to take the engine out and rebuild it I would have kept it. Plus I think it wouldn't have been too difficult to shed about 100lbs off it....maybe not cost effective but lowering the weight of a car can make a difference too. My point is that before everyone attempts to flood the used car market with their cars, people should consider that for the past 20 years we've had great commuter cars that get upwards of 40mpg. Also you can't beat the carbon-footprint savings of not having to build a new car when one already exists.
