I just got word that a third test vehicle has passed the 5000 mile mark of noise-free operation. This was my personal mark set since even brand new VTC sprockets typically will begin to make noise somewhere around 2500 miles of operation, and I wanted to double that with the test parts to guarantee the problem was indeed fixed. A minor note during testing, some mentioned that they had noticed a slight noise upon cold startup and after the oil had warmed a bit, the noise disappeared. I feel this is occuring because the oil is thicker when cold and cannot bleed out of the back of the cams fast enough. So, some residual pressure builds in the sprockets and helps to unseat the VTC piston. Testing with higher viscosity oil has produced the same results, which reinforces the idea that the oil simply isn't bleeding off fast enough. To help alleviate this in the production rebuilds, I have increased the internal spring pressure by 10% from what the test sprockets are currently using. Suffice it to say though, the days of having noisy VTC sprockets are over. At this moment I'm impatiently waiting for the new springs to be delivered so I can begin rebuilding the cores that I have on hand. Expected release date is the end of this month, I will post an ad in the Classified section as soon as they become available. Please go to my website for more information. Here's some pics of the finished product, the back cover is black anodized aluminum, the hardware is stainless steel, and all sprockets will be painted matte black.
