Message Full time student+job, some spare cash but limited, purchased a
mistreated and now blown TT motor (two oil rings), looking for the most
price efficient upgrade.

But I'll be doing all the work myself (as usual).

After talking to a few people, I think I'm going to just mess with the
bottom end, since I haven't had any problems with the heads yet.

But if anyone sends you good advice, I'd be interested to hear, too.

One question I've had is this: if I get a short block package from a Z
dealer, it comes pre-assembled. But what if I want to get my bottom
end reworked and machined? Do they have to balance the crank with it
in the motor, or can I save money by doing the assembly myself without
special tools?
