I think thermodynamics should be a required course for every high freshmen in the United States. And if the kids learn nothing else they need to know that perpetual motion machines don't exist because the universe checkbook that is always balanced (even when it doesn't seem like it).
However, I don't think the US has to worry about destroying forests for it's Biofuel needs or people going hungry as we've paid farmers for years to under produce. That and in some areas farms have been converted into subdivisions....but yeah other countries where civilization has not thrived will continue to not thrive.
