| When people talk about sound quality, they are often talking about clarity and not sound staging. If you want proper sound staging, yes, the tweeters should be equi-distant from your ears. If you want clarity, you want the tweeters at ear level. In home theaters, you get the best of both worlds -- ear-level speakers at equi-distance -- because you have a lot bigger room to work with. In the confinement of a car, you have to compromise. While having the tweeters in the kick panels provides the best sound staging, some people like to sit with their legs spread and thus, blocking the tweeters. On the other hand, others like having the tweeters mounted in the door; this only works if you are more deaf in one ear than the other. My recommendations to get both clarity and sound staging: at ear level, but as far away as possible. Possible suggestion: mount them in the lower corners of the windshield. Ugly, yes. Sounds good, yes.
