| I'm pretty sure this stemmed from the carbuerated days. It was stated that if you ran open headers (reducing backpressure) air would be pulled back through your exhaust valves creating lean conditions coincidentally burning exhaust valves. With fuel injection came the ability to compensate for lean conditions via ECU sending out more fuel thus reducing the heat in the motor cause by lean burns. in my avid 4cyl mazda motor days this question always arose, however i've yet to see a fuel injected car suffer severe damage from no exhaust. as for how the z's exhaust and emissions work, my hands are up.
